Welcome to the course “Mathematical Models for Advocates and Journalists”!

We are very excited that you have agreed to be part of the first cohort to complete this course! Most of all, we are super excited about helping you to build your skills to understand mathematical modeling that you might come across in your work as an advocate or a journalist.

This course is made up of 6 Lessons that will help you to not only understand what mathematical models are and the value that they can bring to your advocacy efforts. They will also help you to build your skills to understand and make use of the findings of mathematical modeling.

The lessons in this course are designed to be self-paced; each lesson builds on the material in the previous lesson. The lessons include:

  • short pre-recorded videos that you can view at your own pace
  • audio recordings of interviews
  • handouts and reference material
  • quizzes and/or assignments to help reinforce the material presented (we will endeavor to provide feedback within one week)

Have questions? Want feedback?

Course facilitators Katharine Kripke and Nadia Carvalho want to make this course engaging and interactive. While enrolled in this course, participants are part of a “Mathematical Models for Advocates and Journalists” Group on Engage, in which we invite you to post questions or interesting modeling studies that you come across for discussion among the group. Course instructors Katharine and Nadia will post answers to any questions that we receive, and we invite others to respond and comment as well.

In addition, we will set up periodic drop-in webinars to share feedback on assignments and to answer questions that may come up.

Time commitment: participants in this course should expect to spend around 45 minutes to an hour on each lesson.

Since you are part of the first cohort to complete this course, we would like to learn from your experience to make improvements to the course. Please click on the “Pre-course Survey” link to complete this survey. At the end of the course, those who have completed all quizzes and assignments will receive a Certificate of Completion. We also ask that you complete the “Post-course Survey” when you have finished going through all of the material, to help us make any revisions to the course content and organization.
