Lesson 3. Case Studies

Nadia Carvalho July 8, 2019

This lesson documents some of the mathematical modeling studies that have been instrumental in influencing HIV prevention policy.

Step 1. Read the interview with Dr. Granich, discussing the initial modeling study that he worked on, which sparked interest in the idea of HIV treatment as a form of HIV prevention.

Dr. Reuben Granich began working on HIV in 1988 and has spent over 20 years addressing HIV and TB in the United States and in more than 25 other low- and middle-income countries around the world. He has worked for national, state, and local governments, as well as with the UN system and in private sector health care.

Step 2. Listen to and read the notes from the interview with Dr. Njeuhmeli on voluntary medical male circumcision modeling.

Dr. Emmanuel Njeuhmeli served as the Senior Biomedical Prevention Advisor at the Office of HIV/AIDS at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for nine years. He was the voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) technical lead for USAID, providing support to the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programs in Eastern and Southern Africa for the introduction and acceleration of the scale-up of the VMMC program.
