As a core guiding principle of GPP, ensuring transparency about the protocol review process is essential for building support for and understanding about the research agenda — especially with affected communities.
Key practices include (1) explaining the parameters, timelines, and specific roles of stakeholders in the process; (2) providing timely feedback about your decisions (about what can/can’t be amended and why); and (3) documenting any questions and comments from discussions and sharing these findings with the trial leadership — even after IRB approval — in order to strengthen future trial design and messaging.

Social media and digital channels have also become options for connection and conversation during the COVID-19 pandemic– when many are feeling isolated. An example of innovative use of media/ digital engagement is Planet DIVOC91.
This project brought together a cohort of adolescents, researchers, artists and scientists, from the UK, India and South Africa, to address some the health and mental health issues faced by young adults during the outbreak.
The diverse team of stakeholders designed an innovative, web-based comic series –accompanied by articles, mixes from DJs and producers and links to videos and artwork– to increase both education and conversation surrounding COVID-19 and its effects on the world.
This creative engagement approach introduced young voices into the COVID-19 research & priority-setting and demonstrated how media can enable powerful “spaces” for collective thinking, learning and action.
