  • It’s a “catch-22”!! It doesn’t get any easier especially with the conspiracy theories around vaccines. There have already been rumors that Africans will be used as guinea pigs in COVID-19 vaccine trials, so how we communicate this to communities will be very key to the success or failure of the trials. Waiting to hear what the rest say.

  • Materials’ development should be a process and not a one off activity. It is important that various options be explored before determining the best option to be adopted. Pretesting materials among the target audience is key as it helps to refine the materials to be used.

This shows how important it is that participants understand the details of the research they are getting involved in. In this way, they actually become advocates for the research among the community and wider public.

  • @Doreen, it’s true that a clear engagement plan is helpful. However considering that we work in communities that are often less privileged and the power relations between the researchers and the community, i think the discussion on inducement and support for research will always arise. I agree with you Cortni, it’s never a good idea to record secretly. This makes me think of the online meetings that have become the ‘new normal’ during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic where the organizers usually mention that proceedings of the meetings will be recorded. I guess in most cases they do not expect anyone to object, but still out of courtesy, they do mention it.

It’s very important that women have a say and control over the options that are available to them. This is exciting news for women and its important that FDA and national regulatory approvals are fast tracked, so that women can have access to this ground breaking innovation!!
