Hi Nat,
The GPP online course is gated. Lessons don’t open up until the date indicated in yellow next to the page. This will sometimes prevention the “Mark Complete” button from appearing right away. Remember, you can always email gpponlinecourse@avac.org or @anne or @jessicaavac-org if you need help!

You can make an argument that the purpose of stakeholder engagement is to get buy-in for a trial. If local stakeholders don’t buy-in to the benefits of the research why move forward?

@rachel Do you have another member of the team who works on data tracking and monitoring your program?

AdministratorNovember 21, 2016 at 9:03 pm in reply to: Lesson 8: Discussion QuestionIt is a great example of how not doing broad engagement can really make things spiral out of control! Gilead did have initial conversations with small groups of individuals but they didn’t really consult broadly and where not transparent about ALL the information. I’d be really interested to hear what others think/know of the trial.

AdministratorOctober 24, 2016 at 4:47 pm in reply to: Lesson 5 Discussion QuestionThis is SUPER interesting! I would love to hear about some of the challenges of using the Whatsapp platform. Do you use a group or communicate with people individually? Do you use it for just key stakeholders or anyone interested in the research or HIV broadly?
As you say, social media has limitations and I wonder how you are handling those limitations in a whatsapp setting. -

AdministratorOctober 24, 2016 at 2:26 pm in reply to: Lesson 5 Discussion QuestionThis is really interesting! I like that you are looking for issues and trends from social media sites. Facebook is really tied to people’s identities. What you like comes up on other people’s feeds and can be reposted. Do you think social media has added any challenges keeping stakeholders independent and there feedback honest?

AdministratorOctober 4, 2016 at 9:39 pm in reply to: Lesson 3 Discussion QuestionYou’re right to take stock of what resources you do have, both internally and externally. I love that you would do outreach with the community to talk about building connections. Don’t just think about referrals but also partnerships. What types of infrastructures already exist that you might tap into to help build capacity in the community?

AdministratorOctober 4, 2016 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Lesson 3 Discussion QuestionI LOVE this idea Elizabeth! I would love to learn more about how you track the success of working with these clubs. Do you have a strategy to measure how the messages are received and how many individuals follow up on the information? I think the innovation is great and would love to hear how you think these partnerships are playing out in the community.

AdministratorOctober 4, 2016 at 9:15 pm in reply to: Lesson 3 Discussion QuestionWhen you say “media” do you mean social media? How are you getting input back from stakeholders through media outlets? I think media is a great way to get the message out and it is important to involve media partners. Traditional media outlets like radio, news and print ads can often be one sided.
I think it is great that you are partnering with faith based leaders to reach the wider community! Building capacity with local leaders is crucial. Maintaining a dialogue and keeping these partners involved with the research process allows you to create opportunities to reach different and broader groups.

AdministratorSeptember 21, 2016 at 7:04 pm in reply to: Lesson 1 Discussion QuestionThank you so much for the poster Nabeel! This is super helpful. Can you talk a little bit more about what you think are the values that underpin informed consent? For many people on this form they are not theoretical principles but are things like “researchers find it cumbersome” or “there needs to be a lot of legal requirements” or “getting the language simplified and adding more photos”. You’re coming from a great perspective (one I see myself has a formally trained bioethicist!) and I think hearing more about the values you mentioned might help people to understand that great perspective!
