Hi Vincent – For measuring media HIV prevention research literacy, it can be helpful to focus on 3-4 indicators that triangulate changes in research literacy:

1.Visibility: # of media mentions/ articles on HIV prevention research (you can disaggregate by media type- newspaper/ television/ Twitter/ social media post, etc.)

    2. Reach: # of new media mentions/articles (focuses on expansion and diversity of media coverage over time- are you getting new coverage or more high profile coverage)

    3. Accuracy: % accuracy of media coverage of HIV prevention research

    4. Media training: More of a process indicator on # journalists/ media trained/ engaged/ or working with to report on HIV prevention research

In terms of measuring, I would suggest thinking about ways to automate tracking, such as using Google alerts for key words, and then that information can be easily organized in a spreadsheet. The accuracy indicator is a bit more effort, as you would need to define how you measure “accuracy” – such as a 5 point scale or % of article that is correct – and someone would need to review each media piece to determine accuracy.

Hi Edith- I am glad to hear it was helpful! Indicators can be used to measure processes (or outputs) as well as outcomes, depending on how the indicator is defined. So in the stakeholder engagement plan you could think about including a mix of indicators, with some focused on processes and others focused on outcomes. If you are struggling with defining outcomes, it might be helpful to start with very immediate or short-term outcomes instead of medium or long term outcomes. For example, a process indicator might be # of meetings held with stakeholders. A couple of short term outcomes could then be: 1.) #/% of meetings held with stakeholders that resulted in agreed upon action plan; 2. #/% of agreed upon action plans implemented within the deadline. When thinking about outcome indicators, it can be helpful to focus on measuring achievement of the immediate objectives of your activities, and then build off of it toward medium or long term outcomes.
